Through the Valley of the Shadow of Death
In April 1994, while living in my beloved home country of Rwanda, my eyes witnessed the manifest presence of evil. At first what I saw seemed to be like a very long dream, but it was not. The reality was before my very eyes! War, extreme hatred and fear surrounded all of us who lived in Rwanda at the time. People were killing one another! What I saw, lived and experienced can be summarized in this: God is good and He is real. Satan, also known as Lucifer, is evil and real as well. Choose you today whom you will serve; “..But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15).
Yes, many of us saw the face of evil. We saw death taking the lives of many through individual and mass killings. We saw death taking the lives of many, young and old alike. A great number of us lost parents, siblings, relatives and friends – in fact, I can barely think of any family that did not lose anyone in Rwanda at that time. Those who were not killed in the 1994 Rwanda Holocaust were killed on the battlefield, as Rwanda had been at war since 1990. Many of those who escaped the Rwanda Holocaust and death from the battlefield, especially civilians, were killed by landmines and other weapons of destruction used during the war. Many of those who escaped the war and Holocaust were killed by plagues that ravaged the country during the time of these killings.
I would have died too but somehow my life was preserved. Many times I asked God, “Why me, Lord? What have I done or given to you so that my life is preserved?”
“Why me? What have I given to You, O, Eternal God that I would survive?” At the beginning of the Holocaust, my elder sister Francoise and her entire family were taken captive and killed a few hours after I left their home! On another occasion, while caught up in the war, a building blew up a few minutes after I left it, destroying everything and everyone in that house! Another time, while riding with a friend, our car was stopped at a blockade. The army ordered my friend to follow them and I never saw him again, for he was taken captive and was killed by the army. My two beloved brothers, Regis and Pascal, were shot to death because of their good education and the tribe they belonged to! Many relatives and friends were killed in this manner as well.
In this book, I share my testimony of what I saw, experienced, lived and learned. One thing I would like to point out is that through the shadow of death I met the Almighty God and came to know Him intimately. O, how He loves you! Through His power, I was given the strength to completely leave the past behind. I chose to move forward and to let go of the past and embrace a new life. I came to realize that it is not possible to hold onto the past and embrace the future. I chose to let go and to forgive. God helped me to overcome many things by renewing my mind to the point where I am free from the horror of the past.
After God had done this great work in me, one person commented that they knew who had killed some of my family members hoping I would like to find out who they were and get revenge, but all I could think of was to pray that these murderers would find what I have found: faith, hope, love and peace through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Going through the valley of the shadow of death has forever changed my life for the best. It is my prayer that as you read on, your life will forever be transformed by the Truth and that you will come to know more and more of the One who is, was and is to come. To know Him who is the author of life and source of all sources. It is my prayer that you will also come to know that the devil is real and his plans are to kill, steal and destroy. Jesus, the Prince of Peace, came to snatch you from the hands of Satan and give you abundant life. God has a great plan for whosoever is willing.
